Pixelate 2006-10 – What happens when communities are empowered through new, creative technology?

The Pixelate project took place from July 2006 – October 2010 and was managed by Lets Go Global. The fundamental aim of Pixelate was to increase the creation of new media content across the communities of Greater Manchester. The project combatted social exclusion through enabling local people to play a more active and creative role in their own communities and get their voices and stories heard in the wider public realm.

In total 36 videos and 3 exhibitions were produced across 10 projects with more than 140 local people aged between 2 and 88 from across the Greater Manchester regions of Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan. All of the work produced as part of this initiative was led by the local communities themselves and delivered by a wealth of video artists, script writers, drama artists, animators and photographers.

The project was funded by the Greater Manchester Strategic Arts Fund (GMSAF) through Arts Council England North West (ACENW) and the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA).

North City Library Welcomes Pixelate

Manchester’s North City Library is hosting a compact version of the Pixelate Exhibition from October 15th to November 15 2010. The work can be found on the 3rd floor of the impressive glass building and features videos from the Manchester project, a showreel of the best of the Pixelate projects as well as photographs from the Wigan project and talented photographer Johan Oldekop.

Pixelate Exhibition Now Open!

The Pixelate 2006-10 exhibition is now open at the Lauriston Gallery, Waterside Arts Centre, Sale and showcases the work we have been delivering over the last 4 years with communities across Greater Manchester.

Empowering Communities Through New Technology – Pixelate 2006-10 is an exciting exhibition of creative community media projects. It features documentary video, portrait photography, short films, animation, video projections and much more, all made by the varied communities of Greater Manchester and associated artists including: Richard Ramchurn, Johan Oldekop, Kim Wiltshire, Mark Haig, Andy Sykes, Kavyasiddhi Mulvey, Luke Marsh, Mat Johns, TheBox.TV & Peopleprint.

Dramatic Pawsed!

The Dramatic Paws project took place at Stockport Art Gallery during the summer holidays. 11 young people aged 13-17 worked with animator Luke Marsh to come up with their own short animations videos.

The young people produced an amazing array of work and the final film is still being edited. You can see a preview here:

A Twisted Fairy Tale finale!

The Oldham Pixelate project with Young Oldham Dance Company concluded on July 9th with a performance of their interactive dance/video piece, A Twisted Fairy Tale at Oldham Museum.

The performance featured projections of a human heart onto a 7ft balloon as well as projections onto square screens that the dancers interacted with. The main performance video will be uploaded soon. Watch this space! Here are a few stills from the event:

Empowering Communities Through New Technology – Pixelate 2006-10. This new exhibition will take place at the Lauriston Gallery, Waterside Arts Centre, Sale from Sat 18th September to Sat 16th October 2010.

The Pixelate exhibition marks a milestone in community media development across Greater Manchester. Working with a wealth of local and regional video artists, script writers, drama artists, animators and photographers the local communities of Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Salford, Stockport, Rochdale, Tameside and Wigan have developed their own digital content, telling their own stories and broadcasting these globally through the use of new technology.

The exhibition features documentary video, portrait photography, visual projections, short films and animation all made by the varied communities of Greater Manchester.

The exhibition also showcases work by a range of digital artists, photographers, script writers and animators who were involved in delivering the projects including Richard Ramchurn, Johan Oldekop, Mat Johns, Kim Wiltshire, Andy Sykes, Luke Marsh, The Box TV & Peopleprint.

Oldham project gets off to an impressive start!

Richard Ramchurn and Lucas Buigues have begun work with the Young Oldham Dance group to develop an interactive video piece to be used during a dance performance planned for July 2010. The groups have been meeting every Friday evening and experimenting with different methods of video projection using various materials and objects (see below!).

Lucas has been creating an original score based on music Young Oldham Dance Company has provided.

The Company are developing the piece around the theme of domestic violence. Taking inspiration from video artists Tony Orsler and Bill Viola they are developing an abstract visual style with projections, shadows and objects. Young Oldham Dance Company also have the opportunity to pick up some digital video skills.

Consultant needed for the Pixelate project

Consultancy brief: Pixelate Project Evaluation 2006-10

Lets Go Global is seeking a consultant to provide an independent evaluation of the Pixelate, community media project.

The closing date will be Wednesday 26th May 2010 at 5pm and interviews will be held in early June.

A report for Phase 1 of the project (2006-8) has already been produced internally and is available here along with a copy of the brief.

Exhibition Confirmed

A new exhibition featuring all the work created during the 4 years of the Pixelate project will be taking place at The Waterside Arts Centre’s Lauriston Gallery from September 18th to November 6th 2010. The exhibition will also feature work from many of the artists who have been involved in the projects including film-makers, animators and photographers.
