Manchester

Guerilla Journalism!

Delivery: 5th to 30th October 2009

Artist/s: BBC Trainers – Claire Wardle (Social Media), Natalie Hancock & Karin Thayer (Multi-media)

Outputs: 7 short video pieces from the In The City music conference and a dedicated Facebook page

The focus of the project was to develop professional, work related skills for local people in response to the development of Mediacity.uk in Salford Quays. The re-location of several key BBC departments means that there will soon be greater accessibility to skilled jobs, specific to the production of the cutting-edge content. It was felt that education and training in these areas is required for local people who are not presently working in the industry.

The project was delivered in partnership with the BBC Connect & Create initiative and in collaboration with Manchester City Council Cultural Strategy Team.

Recruitment was focused on East Manchester, as this is an area of the city where there is very little cultural activity, or involvement in the Arts and Media.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to go out and produce and film a real event. Much more useful than a set up exercise that you get in most training courses” – participant from East Manchester.

BBC trainers and a group of BBC Manchester staff worked alongside the participants from Let’s Go Global to learn social media and multi-media reporting skills. The participants then put these into practice during the ‘In The City’ music conference where working in small teams they filmed and recorded interviews and stories of interest. The content was then uploaded onto a dedicated Facebook page to be viewed by the general public.

The project was a fun, exciting and accessible project that also endowed the participants with media/production skills that are transferable to working at the BBC.
